BECOME A HOST FAMILY

What is the au pair program?

The Aupairfect au pair program is a cultural exchange program that offers a unique experience and provides numerous benefits for both host families and au pairs.

Hosting an au pair provides flexible and affordable childcare for your family. It is an ideal solution for creating a more balanced everyday life and allowing you to spend more quality time with your children. The au pair program comes with many advantages. It is reassuring to know that your children are being carefully looked after in their familiar home environment. In addition, it gives you more time for yourself—whether that means an evening workout or a well-deserved date night. The au pair program offers a level of flexibility that other forms of childcare cannot provide, while for children it brings the added benefit of learning a new language and culture, broadening their horizons. The au pair also helps with light household tasks, allowing you to focus on other important responsibilities. Overall, the au pair program is an excellent opportunity for a reliable, committed young person to become a valued part of your family.

  • Au pairs generally work 30 hours per week, with weekends off. If weekend work or additional hours are needed, this must be agreed upon in advance with the au pair.
  • Please note that in certain countries, such as Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, or Belgium, working hours, pocket money, and other benefits for au pairs are regulated by law.

To become a host family, the following points should be taken into consideration:

  • Au pair as a family member:
The au pair becomes a full member of the family and takes part in family life and activities in order to fully experience the culture of another country.
  • Au pair working schedule:
Au pairs work 30 hours per week, with a maximum of 8 hours per day. They are entitled to two days off per week, usually on weekends.
  • Accommodation and full board:
The au pair receives free accommodation, a fully furnished private room, and three meals a day, seven days a week.
  • Pocket money:
Au pairs receive weekly pocket money as compensation for their childcare duties. In some countries, the amount is regulated by law, while in others it is determined by local customs.
  • Language course support:
One of the core requirements of the au pair program is that host families must provide time, opportunity, and financial support for au pairs to improve their language skills. In some countries, the level of financial support is regulated by law; for example, in Austria, host families are required to cover 50% of the cost of the language course.
  • Childcare:
Au pairs assist with various childcare tasks, but they do not provide full-time care for infants, overnight care, or perform deep cleaning.
  • Teaching the daily routine:
Host families must dedicate time to train the au pair in their duties and familiarize them with the family’s daily routine.
  • Children:
The family must have at least one child under the age of 13.

My host family is amazing, and after just the first few days I already felt like part of the family. So this au pair experience has really worked out great for me—it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life so far 💙.
